WINNIPEG -- Even ugly wins are good, said Winnipeg Blue Bombers coach Mike OShea after his team overcame struggles to beat the Ottawa Redblacks 36-28 in the expansion teams CFL debut on the road. Fake 76ers Jerseys . "If you can win ugly, win ugly, it dont matter, its a win," said OShea as the Bombers improved their record to 2-0 to start the season, just one win less than the team managed in all of 2013. "The guys in the locker-room are just feeling it. A win like that just gets them tighter and tighter together and gets us closer to where we need to be. Theres still lots of work to do . . . but they get that." Outside the other dressing room at Investors Group Field, another rookie head coach had less to be happy about. "Were incredibly disappointed to lose," said Rick Campbell. "That was one that was there for the taking. Its a hard league to win in. Youve got to make sure you make enough plays to win the game and they made one more than we did." Veteran quarterback Henry Burris said they failed at many levels. "We were way too inconsistent when it counted," said Burris. "This is a team loss because in every aspect we could have done better." With three first-quarter touchdowns, two from running back Chevon Walker and another from slotback Dobson Collins, Burris and the Redblacks jumped into an early lead. But after that, the Bomber defence pretty well shut them down for most of the game and Winnipegs special teams helped to even things up. Ottawa had two field goals and a single in the last three quarters of football as the Bombers edged closer. Demond Washingtons 96-yard kick return for a third-quarter touchdown was huge for the Bombers, and running back Nic Grigsby had three touchdowns, including the game winner in the fourth quarter. "It was awesome getting that feeling back, being able to be the spark plug for the game and help the team finish with a big win," said Grigsby, who has been out of football for a while after a stint at the B.C. Lions camp in 2012. An injury to Will Ford saw him get the starters spot although his performance in camp also made it a tough decision. Lirim Hajrullahu had three field goals for the Bombers. Quarterback Drew Willy smacked his throwing hand, perhaps on a helmet, but says he will be ready to play in Montreal and at no point did he think of leaving the game. "The third quarter it definitely bothered me but the guys did a good job telling me to keep fighting through it, fighting through the pain," he said. "Obviously our crowd wad behind us and thats tough on any away quarterback." The game marked the return of Ottawa to the league it left in 2006 due to money troubles. That, plus Winnipegs win in its season opener, put a few more fans in the seats with a count of 27,553. And they were deafening when the Redblacks had the ball. CFL commissioner Mark Cohon was on hand for the historic occasion. "I think we have a great franchise in the Ottawa Redblacks," said Cohon, who started working to bring Ottawa back into the league shortly after he became commissioner in 2007. "When we did that deal, to where they are today, its a much stronger league and theyre very happy to be part of something that is growing. And I think theyre one of the big reasons why theres a lot of excitement this year around the league." Unlike last week, when Winnipeg opened its season against the Toronto Argonauts, there was no early Bomber scoring drive. Willy went two and out. Instead, Burris took advantage of midfield position on his first possession to set up Ottawas first touchdown on a four-yard run by Walker to make it 7-0. He followed it about two minutes later with a 58-second drive and 26-yard pass to Collins and the Redblacks took a 14-0 lead. Up to that point, the Bomber offence hadnt managed to get out of their half of the field. Willy finally connected with Nick Moore for 51 yards to get in scoring range on a six-play 73-yard drive with about four minutes left in the first. Grigsby carried it the last yard to get the Bombers on the board. But Ottawa wasnt finished and Walker caught an eight-yard pass to make it 21-7 before the quarter ended. The Redblacks stalled in the second with penalties and finished the game with 16 to Winnipegs 12, although both lost 120 yards as a result and OShea said thats an area he wants to see fixed. Winnipeg narrowed the gap with Grigsbys four-yard run for his second touchdown of the night. Hajrullahus 47-yard field goal as the half ended made it 21-17 and he hit with a 16-yarder just over four minutes into the second half to bring the Bombers within one. The Redblacks crept ahead on Mahers single and widened it a little more to 25-20 with his 44-yard field goal just before the third quarter ended. He hit at 19 as well in the fourth to make it 28-20. Washingtons return touchdown again brought the Bombers within two as Willy missed the two-point conversion, but it was left to Grigsby to deliver the final blow and Hajrullahus 37-yard field goal with about 30 seconds sealed the victory. Werths two-out RBI double in the eighth inning capped a late rally and the Nationals avoided a series sweep with a 6-5 win over the New York Mets on Sunday night. The Nationals trailed 5-2 in the seventh, but scored once in that inning on Wilson Ramos run-scoring single and added three in the eighth. The victory moved Washington within 6 1/2 games of Cincinnati for the final National League wild-card berth. The Reds lost at Colorado 7-4 on Sunday. "Were stoked," said Bryce Harper, who reached base three times and contributed during the rally. "I was fired up, unbelievably fired up when (Werth) hit that double. ... Hes been in that situation so many times in his career. That was just an unbelievable moment." Not so much for the Mets bullpen as reliever Gonzalez Germen (1-2) allowed one run after Scott Rice gave up two in the eighth. "Anytime you can win a series, its big," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "This time of the year, youve got to win as many as you can. "Certainly, this is one were going to look back on and kick ourselves a little bit for letting it get away. But yeah, winning a series is big." Rice entered in the eighth with the Mets leading 5-3. New Yorks third pitcher, Rice allowed consecutive singles including Denard Spans pinch-hit single which extended the outfielders hitting streak to 15 games. After Harper sacrificed the runners to second and third, Scott Hairston scored on Anthony Rendons groundout and Span came around on Ryan Zimmermans infield single. Werths second double of the game found the right-centre gap for one of Washingtons 16 hits, scoring Zimmerman from first base. "He had the most unbelievable BP today," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said of Werth. "Hes been swinging the bat good. Hes driven." Because the Nationals drove in those late runs, they wont be lugging a losing skid with them to their next series. Johnson: "I cant sleep as it is. ... Id have nightmares riding on the bus to Philly. There is a lot of baseball left. We just have to keep chugging away one game at a time." Recalled from Triple-A Syracuse before the game, reliever Erik Davis (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth. "It was exciting to get in there on my first day back," Davis said. "I was just happy to get out there and put up a zero. It was an awesome comeback by us." Rafael Soriano, Washingtons sixth pitcher, finished the Mets off in the ninth for his 36th save. Philadelphia 76ers Pro Shop. . Daniel Murphy and Lucas Duda each drove in two runs, and Matt de Dekker smacked his first career home run for the Mets. New York last swept a series from Washington May 25-27, 2009. Murphys hot hitting stretch continued with an RBI double in the first inning and a two-out run-scoring single in the fifth against Ross Ohlendorf. The second baseman has 11 hits in his past 19 at-bats. New York had 30 hits during the past two games. Mets starter Jonathon Niese never had a 1-2-3 inning, but the Nationals managed only single runs in the second and fourth against him. He allowed two runs and 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings before leaving with a left leg cramp. "Its that kind of year," Niese said of New Yorks string of injuries, including first baseman Ike Davis on Saturday. "Today was tough, it was so humid. I was crushing Gatorades and water, and still cramping up." Scott Atchison replaced Niese with two outs in the sixth and stranded two inherited runners. Ramos RBI single against Atchison in the seventh made it 5-3. "We finally got some hits with runners out there," Johnson said. "It took a while." Murphy followed Eric Youngs leadoff double with a two-base hit for New Yorks first run and scored one out later on Dudas single. Another RBI single from Duda, who started for Davis, made it 5-2 in the seventh. New York went ahead 3-0 as de Dekkers first major league home run landed in the second deck of the right-centre field stands. Ohlendorf pitched five innings, allowing four runs and nine hits. He had a 2.82 ERA in four previous starts this season. Notes: Zimmerman had three hits. ...The Mets, with their rotation depleted by injuries, have signed RHP Aaron Harang to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League. Harang was 5-11 with a 5.76 ERA in 22 starts this year for the Seattle Mariners. Overall, he has pitched 12 years in the majors, going 110-115 with a 4.29 ERA. ...
